CULTURE AND ETHNICITY IN DEMENTIA: DEMENTIA FRIENDLY GURUDWARAS PROJECT

Introduction

A Gurudwara (Sikh Temple) is a place where Sikhs come together for congregational worship. Its primary purpose is to disseminate the eternal teachings of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, the living Guru of the Sikhs. It is also a place to learn Sikh ethics, philosophy, theology, customs, traditions, languages and texts. Besides this, it is a community centre, and offers food, shelter and companionship to all those who need it irrespective of their race, caste, religion, creed or sexual orientation.

A significant proportion of the congregation is made up of the elderly. As longevity is the most important risk factor for developing Alzheimer’s disease – the most common form of dementia – it was recognised that some of the Gurudwara’s focus should be to raise awareness of dementia, improve accessibility for those with dementia, and provide support to carers and their families.

From the outset in 2012, a core group of Sikh health care professionals who were passionate about making a difference to those affected by dementia came together to spearhead this initiative. A decision was made to initially work with only one Gurudwara with a view to presenting it nationally as a model of a Dementia Friendly Gurudwara. Our local Gurudwara, the Ramgharia Gurudwara Sahib in Bradford, was selected for this purpose. With the aid of Cathy Henwood, Bradford Dementia Friendly Communities coordinator, an action plan was constructed. This was presented to the organisational leaders of the Gurudwara.
